In 2021, Electronic Image had the awesome opportunity to collaborate with Metallica on their latest album, 72 Seasons. To launch this highly anticipated record, Metallica commissioned a music video for each track and organized a global, one-night-only theatrical release. Alongside L.A.-based Setta Studio, Electronic Image was honored to be selected to direct and co-produce the music video and visualizer for the standout track “Shadows Follow.”
From concept to capture, and through the stages of editing, animating audio-reactive visuals, and crafting cutting-edge VFX, Electronic Image delivered a powerful visual experience. We are immensely proud to have played a pivotal role in this groundbreaking event, creating a stunning visual journey that accompanied the album’s debut, which charted at number 2 on the US Billboard 200 and saw 15.9 million streams. 🤘
Live Visual Performance
In the fall of 2023, Electronic Image had the extraordinary opportunity to produce live visuals for composer Randall Dunn at the prestigious Le Guess Who? festival in Utrecht, Netherlands. With musical credits including collaborations with Sunn O))), Earth, Danny Elfman, and Marissa Nadler, Dunn is known for a production style that coheres analog techniques with mystical, otherworldly sound design. The festival, renowned for its cutting-edge and experimental music lineup, provided the perfect stage for our environmental visual artistry. Electronic Image crafted song-specific looping assets for the live set, and integrated tools to dynamically affect these visuals in real-time. The visual component, performed live alongside Dunn, acted as visual counterpoint for his soundscapes, creating a memorable, immersive experience for festival-goers.
Production + Museum Installation
Mark Dorf’s innovative 2022 film A New Nature was crafted with videography, graphic design, and VFX created under the Electronic Image banner—including image capture, color grading, editing, and installation across many locations. The film premiered at the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich, Switzerland, and was subsequently showcased at the Beijing Art and Technology Biennial, Honor Fraser Gallery in Los Angeles, as well as The Public Works Administration in NYC. A standout moment was its commission to take over all the screens in Times Square as part of Times Square Arts’ Midnight Moment, an esteemed public program for digital art and video.
Each installation of A New Nature came with its own unique set of challenges—for example, managing compositions for different aspect ratios for over 100 screens in Times Square, or working with color requirements across many formats and technologies. Details like LED-backlit monitors for gallery installation created a more profound viewer experience. Electronic Image met these challenges head-on, ensuring smooth and successful design and executions that were met with critical acclaim.
